You do not have to be a social media expert to make an impact online. For many churches—especially smaller ones—platforms like Facebook or Instagram can feel unnecessary or overwhelming. After all, your ministry has worked fine without them.
But here is the truth: People are online every day. If your church is not there, you are missing a chance to connect with them where they already spend their time.
Here are a few simple steps to get started.
Start With Why
Before you worry about platforms or posts, ask: What do we want to accomplish? Most churches share the same goals: inviting more people to church, sharing the gospel, keeping members connected, and encouraging generosity. These goals guide the kind of content you will share. And the good news? You do not need daily updates or a full marketing plan—just small, consistent steps.
Choose One Platform
Do not spread yourself thin by trying to be everywhere. Start with one platform—Facebook is often best, especially for churches with an older audience. Post service times, event updates, scripture, and encouraging stories. Share what you already have: sermons, volunteers, and your church family. Once you are comfortable, you can add Instagram or even TikTok later.

Be Authentic, Not Perfect
People connect with real stories, not polished graphics. Show behind-the-scenes moments, share a quote from Sunday’s message, or post a thank-you to volunteers. A simple video of your worship team practicing can draw people in more than a flashy design. Think of your posts as personal touches that invite people into your community.
Think Local
Your online audience will mostly live nearby. Use social media to invite them to events like youth nights, food drives, or holiday services. Highlight how your church is involved in the community or offer ways people can ask for prayer. Every post is like a friendly “hello” at your church’s front door.
Encourage Giving Through Stories
Instead of leading with “Give Now,” share stories of how generosity has made an impact: backpacks for kids, support during tough times, or help for local families. Then, provide a simple link or QR code for those who want to give.

Do Not Do It Alone
If social media feels overwhelming, ask for help. A college student, young parent, or anyone familiar with posting online can help bring your church’s vision to life. With a little consistency and a lot of heart, your church can use social media to welcome, encourage, and inspire—without needing to be experts.
